Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the lake at the other side of the castle Trakoscan in northern Croatia.

Time

It was some time in the afternoon, but it was very cloudy, and the sky was changing constantly, and so was lighting.

Lighting

Lighting was natural, but dimm, because of the heavy clouds and occasional rain. Clouds filtered the light so there was no harsh shadows, but it was maybe even a bit too dark.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3200 and Tamron 18-200mm lens. Love those lens because they are handy for all sorts of photos and subjects, if you want to zoom in or have a wide angle, it's all in one.

Inspiration

I was walking around the lake, following the foothpath, and constantly shooting, trying to find the best angle of this picturesque dreamy old castle on the top of this little hill. I just love how it is surrounded by nature and forests, so peacefull, and lovely. The reflection in the lake is a cherry on the top of the cake!

Editing

I was experimenting a bit with post processing this one. I used Lightroom, and besides the standard corrections, I used gradual filters to achieve this difference in colours of the sky and its reflection, trying to achieve surreal, magic, a propper fairytale look... Clouds deifinitelly add to dramma, so I used some clarity brushes on them, to emphasize those heavy clouds a bit more.

In my camera bag

Nikon D3200, Tamron 18-200mm lens, Nikon 50mm prime lens, little tripod, remote shutter release, extra battery and plenty of SD cards.

Feedback

Again, it is important to have your camera with you when you walk into something like this. ;) Be patient, walk arround, explore different angles, positions, compositions.... keep shooting, a lot, you can easily delete all the unwanted shots afterwards. Be creative, keep playing!
