Behind The Lens

Location

This is a sweet accidental shot because the weather played fun with us.

Time

This was shot in the early evening.

Lighting

Monsoon clouds were filling the sky. As luck would have it, the clouds parted a little in the western sky.

Equipment

Nikon D2x hand held with Nikkor 50/1.4 AFD. Available light with flexible reflector.

Inspiration

It started drizzling suddenly on the second day of the shoot for a real estate developer. This large bush was the nearest cover of some kind, so we sat under it waiting for the drizzle to stop. As we waited the clouds parted and the light on her face was like... butter. I had enough time to change the lens and shoot only 5 frames before the light changed to flat grey because of the overcast.

Editing

Simple raw conversion with light color and contrast balancing. Nothing fancy.

In my camera bag

There was a time I would carry lots of equipments on location shoots. From 4x5 to 35mm with lots of lenses with never ending cases and bags full of lights, stands and tripod. I am sure my assistants hated it. I don't carry lights, stands, reflectors etc anymore. I just give a list to the shoot co-ordinator. I own and use Nikon equipments mostly and they are old stuff and I'm happy with them. I shoot with other camera brands too if needed. My favourite lenses are 20/2.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 105/2.8 micro, 80-200/2.8. But nowadays I like to travel light with minimal equipment.

Feedback

Always be ready for the unexpected. Don't fall in the equipment race trap. I believe in the 'Eye Behind the Camera' and the 'Art of Seeing'.
