Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at one of my favourite secluded beaches on Vancouver Island.

Time

This was taken just after the sun set behind the mountains and clouds in the distance.

Lighting

For shooting sunsets, a higher f-stop will give you a starburst effect with sunlight. For night photography, a small aperture will ensure you can crank your ISO and not bring in too much noise. Keep your exposure under 30 seconds to avoid blobby stars (as a rule of thumb).

Equipment

I believe this was taken with a Canon 70D with the Tokina 11 - 16 2.8. I've upgraded since that time to a Canon 5Ds and an 16-35 2.8L to use for night photography.

Inspiration

I absolutely love hiking into this secluded beach. This is my favourite tree, and I have taken photos of it in every light and weather condition.

Editing

Aside from some minor slider adjustments in photoshop (I don't use LR), there would be no post processing, nor any object removal in this photo.

In my camera bag

Canon 5Ds, 70-200 2.8 US2 L is always on my camera. For wide angle I shoot with my Canon 16-35mm 2.8L, Portraits, I shoot with a Sigma 85mm 1.4. I have others for other reasons, but these are my go to lenses. ND filters, remote shutter.

Feedback

For landscape, I always use a tripod, and also, like to use a remote shutter. For landscape photography, I always have a couple of ND Filters in my bag. My advice on ND Filters is to buy the better quality ones. I have a B&W ND10 that I really like. :)
