Very cool shot Barbara. I love old weathered buildings and you did a great job of showing the texture and character of this one. Congratulations on being a finalist.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Duboise, an awesome, authentic little town in Wyoming. I stayed overnight there and walked the entire main street talking photos of fascinating old buildings and structures.

Time

This was around 10:00 a.m. if I remember correctly.

Lighting

It was natural lighting.

Equipment

I used a Sony Nex-6 with my regular 17-50mm lens.

Inspiration

I had been on a trip to Yellowstone to photograph the bison and was on my way home to Idaho when we passed through Duboise, Wyoming. Because of the old, quaint, wooden sidewalks, I was attracted immediately to the town. We decided to stay overnight and "do" the town the next day. This photo was on an abandoned, ignored building that has stood there slowly decaying. I thought the dirt and whatever is dark here would show show texture, and the window actually hints that perhaps it's isn't quite as abandoned as I thought. Photos of windows just seem to "hint" of what might be inside.

Editing

Post-processing was the basic sliders on iPhoto. The camera was set on an in-camera HDR which gave the texture more intensity.

In my camera bag

I have my Sony Nex-6 with the 17-50mm, and 3 more lenses...a 14mm, a fish-eye and a 50-210mm. I carry a cleaning brush, 2 extra batteries and 1 extra memory card.

Feedback

I love coming into a very small town and literally walking the length of the main street on both sides. I don't have preconceived ideas of what I what to shoot. I just shoot what catches my eye as I walk....people, buildings, signs, roads, trees, plants, animals, store windows, towers, trailers, cars, etc. I try to go in close and avoid cropping too much later. I tend to focus on the parts rather than the whole.
