Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at home in my living room. I made an improvised studio using a projecting screen (because of purple floral wallpaper on the walls) and by moving the furniture. It was my very first photo-shooting actually. I asked my boyfriend to be my model and thank God he said yes (he's really handsome and many times I tried to push him into this career). But he's kind of funny guy so it was (and still is) quite hard to take a good picture of him 'cause he's making funny faces all the time and just can't stay calm and be serious. Also I didn't really know much about posing and taking a photo at all. My boyfriend was the one who made me start doing photography and teached me everything 'cause he's doing it a little by himself at that time but he didn't find it as satisfying as making a video (today, he's brilliant cinematographer) and because I was editing photos for a few years then as well. So David (model and instructor at once) and I (big admirer of photography yet complete amateur) made my first series of portraits ever. And now I think it was a really good idea.

Time

It's really hard to tell because I took about a half a million photos before my model got bored and tired so we were shooting for more than just few hours. It was a long time ago ass well so I really don't remember. But I'm sure it wasn't at night 'cause I remember using blinds on the window because of the sun so I guess it was late afternoon maybe.

Lighting

Haha, well.. The lighting was terrible throughout all this photo session 'cause all we had was one external flash which didn't work without using the built-in flash. So I tried to use some shading for the built-in flash but then the external flash lost the connection sometimes and that's why this and few more photos were a bit under-exposed. I liked it though and I decided to remake this photo into a dark one in a post-process.

Equipment

All very basic. And all of it was my boyfriends (in fact I still don't own a camera...I know) So I used "our" (shame on me :D) very first camera Nikon D3100 with original lens and external flash (I don't remember the brand). That's it.

Inspiration

It was all about just testing, experimenting and basically pressing a button to make some ordinary portraits. It wasn't an intention to make a photo like this. Funny thing is that he almost didn't let me upload this photo anywhere because he didn't like how he looks on it but I convinced him somehow finally.

Editing

I love editing photos more than anything else (if Photoshop would be a guy I'd marry him), it's my true passion. Taking a photo for me is just not as exciting as the part after it. But unfortunately I lost the psd file of this photo, so the post-process is now secret even for me. I can just guess. I'm sure I did some skin retouch and colored the background to black. Then I think I played with lights and shadows, used some curves and just turned it into b&w..

In my camera bag

Everything what my boyfriend provides me :D PS: I'm broke

Feedback

To be honest I was just lucky if I captured a good photo when I started. And if it wasn't good I made it good in a post-process.
