This photo is of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I'm not really a city person, but I think I could've spent the whole night taking pictures of this beautiful feat of architecture. You can see the towers from almost anywhere in the city, but close-up is definitely better!Time
Lunch time. Only joking! It was fairly late in the evening, but the city was still so busy. The thing I love about travelling to foreign cities is the variations between night and day. The vibrancy, atmosphere, people, sights, sounds and smells are all different. I went for a late dinner and to visit the towers and ended up staying out here until about 10pm!Lighting
All the lighting in this image came from what was used to illuminate the towers. I used a fairly slow shutter speed to enhance the vibrancy and contrast with the dark sky. I didn't have my tripod with me, so I was laying on the pavement to help keep the camera steady.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 60D, with an 18-135mm f/3.5 lens and a polarizing filter. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
These were once the world's tallest building(s) and I really wanted a shot that captured their high grandeur and all its detail. Having spent a while taking "selfies" and other typical tourist shots, I started to get creative with some abstract patterns by zooming in on the various different corners of the towers. As I was changing my angles and perspective, I changed my focus to the bridge between the two towers and the best result is what you see before you.Editing
I took this shot when I first starting getting into photography and so it was shot in a J-PEG format. Therefore, to keep the quality of the shot, I tried to keep post-processing to a minimum. I used Picasa to enhance the lighting, contrast and sharpen the image. Some while later, I returned to the edited image and used Lightroom 4 to increase the vibrancy of the colours from a grey to the bluey-lilac you see now.In my camera bag
At the time this was taken, very little. My camera, the one lens and a polarizing filter. Now, I often take a tripod, neutral density filter, a wide-angle lens, macro lens, a remote timer and, of course, spare batteries. I try to pack light and usually just take what I think I will need for each occasion.Feedback
Always, always, look for various angles - try and think outside the box. I'm a self-taught photographer and most of my best work has been a result of trial and error. I always learn something new on every shoot I do. Experimentation is key, but remember that often, keeping it simple can prove best. In the city, you want to look at the lighting. Is the contrast hard or soft? Where do the shadows fall? How does this affect your subject and what angle should you shoot your subject at? And don't be afraid to get down and dirty... I had to lie on the floor to take this one!
