Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in my neighbor's back yard.
Time
It was taken at 7:41am.
Lighting
The light is the morning sun. I was quite fortunate that the exposure was so perfect as it could easily have been over or under exposed, and I only had the opportunity to take a single shot with a point and shoot camera.
Equipment
The shot was taken with a Kodak Z612 Zoom Digital Camera. I owned a DSLR at the time (8/29/07) but it was not handy and I was concerned that I would miss the opportunity, so I grabbed my point and shoot and went for the shot. (Proof that you can take great images with virtually any properly functioning camera if you put the right thing(s) in front of your lens.)
Inspiration
In a word, nature. It was a beautiful morning, I was having coffee on my patio enjoying the sounds of the morning when I saw the hummingbird zooming around the bird of paradise flowers in my neighbor's yard. It was just a perfect image - gorgeous light, terrific subject, and bright floral colors. I saw the shot, but it was a wonder that I was able to get my Kodak, lean over the fence into the neighbor's yard, and nail the shot. A second later the bird was long gone!
Editing
At the time I took the shot I did not have any quality photo editing software. Even today this is one of the least edited photos in my gallery even though I have made a (very) few adjustments in Lightroom. Mostly just a crop and some sharpening. I have taken it into Photoshop several times but never found anything to improve the image.
In my camera bag
Canon 5D Mark iii, Canon 70D, Canon M3 Mirrorless, Canon lenses (16-35mm, 24-105mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm Macro, and 70-200mm), 600EX-RT flash with ST-E3-RT transmitter, Sekonic Light Meter, and two remotes.
Feedback
My advice: 1) Learn to use your camera, I mean really learn to use the camera. Fumbling with settings on a camera as the subject disappears, or the perfect light recedes makes shots like this impossible. 2) Practice "seeing", even when you don't have a camera. I got this shot because I saw the subject, light and flowers as an image. I wish I was a thousand times better at this skill, but it can be acquired and improved through seriously working at it. Ultimately it is about awareness and finding the right composition. Thanks so much for your interest in my work.
