Location
This photo was taken in my hometown, in Iloilo City, Philippines. Ironically, I had been searching all over the world to find the perfect character to photograph only to realize that I can find her in my own "backyard".Time
At around 10 AM along the sidewalk of our downtown. She was selling cigarettes in that same spot for almost 3 decades, according to her.Lighting
I brought her along the shaded area to make the light more dramatic. The road and the white wall in front of her provided us with a natural reflector.Equipment
Nikon D200 with 105mm Nikkor lens. I used only the natural light.Inspiration
Her character inspired me to shoot her. She was deaf but she has plenty of stories to tell. She was wrinkled but she wore her beauty in every line on her face. She had crooked fingers but she wore her rings like a seasoned performer. She was old but she has a young heart. She brought me into her own world. I wanted to tell her story.Editing
I adjusted the contrast to emphasize the details of her face. I also sharpened selectively. In my camera bag
Now, a Sony camera (A7R) with a 24-70 lens. I can live with just those 2 equipments. And yes, lots of passion.Feedback
Be spontaneous. When dealing with such an amazing character, don't pose her. Let her be her self. Listen to her story. And show that story in the picture. The hand is a powerful storyteller. Use it to supplement the rich story of her face.
