Behind The Lens

Location

I live on the NSW Central Coast, one of the prettiest places on the East Coast of Australia. The actual location is called Terrigal. At Terrigal is a famous local landmark called the Skillion. The rocks out the front of the Skillion are a Beautiful place to shoot due to the way water flows over them. It's always wonderful for reflections much like what has been caught here.

Time

I have made a personal and Business commitment to catch Sunrise every day of the year. I started on the 6th October 2013 and I have seen some Beautiful Sunrises in that time. It is the best time of day and the best part is you never know what your going to get. This particular shot was taken on the 19th September 2014 at 6:40:49

Lighting

As I mentioned earlier I have shot Sunrise every day now for over a year. Having seen so many sunrise I can say that this was one of the best I had seen in quite a while. The colours of the sky and clouds were amazing especially when I managed to catch the reflections in the water standing on the rocks.

Equipment

I have been shooting for over 30 years and I am exclusively a Nikon Man. I shoot with a Nikon D3s and for this shot the 24-70mm f2.8 lens. I have a collection of Lee filters and I used the the .6 and .9 soft grad filter to control the sky. The settings on camera were f8 and a 0.3 second exposure at ISO100. The Tripod I favour is an Induro CT314 Carbon Fibre with the Manfrotto MH057 Ball Head.

Inspiration

Since I was a kid I have risen early to watch the Night sky and how it brightens to day. No two Sunrises are alike and when I started to make Photography my full time career I decided to catch every Sunrise. Since the 6th October I have risen Rain Hail or Shine, Sick or Well to make sure I catch that wonderful moment when the day starts new.

Editing

I am an old school Photographer. I learn't in the mid 80's while at school on a hand me down Cosina camera. With money I saved from several part time jobs I purchased a Nikon EM and have shot manual my entire life. To me getting the image looking close to what I want in camera is important. I shoot in RAW and I do use CS6's Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) to process my images. Having worked many years in a dark room I equate what the adjustments in ACR do to the wizardry in the dark room. Very little processing is done in Photoshop itself other than resize and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

I have several "bags" to suit the shoot I am going on. For my landscape work the "bag" contains my D3s body and the D300 backup. The Main lens I love to use for Landscape is the 16-35mm f4 Nikon, I find it incredibly sharp and the distortions can be fixed in ACR. The 14mm f2.8 lens is also a great one to keep handy as it gives the wider field and the faster lens is great for Milky Way nightscapes. The 24-70mm f2.8 lens is wonderful to give you just that little bit extra reach. I never go on a Landscape shoot without my Lee filters. A set of 0.3,0.6 and 0.9 in both Hard and Soft grad allow for any landscape and the Big Stopper to get the Long exposure effects. I carry an SB900 flash in the bag as you never know when you will need a flash. The Remote timer for long exposures and time lapse. My standard Tripod is the Induro CT314 with the Manfrotto MH057 Ball Head. Last but not least are the Zeiss Cleaning wipes, They have saved me on more than one occasion.

Feedback

Practice, Practice Practice. The best advise I can give is to try to shoot everyday and make sure you take not of the images you think work and what you did to take them. Its easy today as all of the shooting data is recorded. When I learnt to shoot I would have a note book with me every time I used the camera and noted what the settings were, what the conditions were like and reviewed this when I developed the film. I recommend that people should set a limit to the number of shots they take at a Sunrise or Sunset shoot. Equate that to the old film days making the limit 36 shots to 24 shots. The challenge is to walk away with not just 1 but several images you would be proud to display. This will no only cure the Spray and Pray approach to Photography but allow people to really develop everything from learning how to use the light to composition. Another good thing to do is turn your back on the sun and see what the light is doing behind you.
