This photo was taken in Iceland during my holidays in September 2014 at the Jökulsárlón-ice lagoon.Time
This was taken at 4:19 PM on September 9, 2014, at the entrance of the lagoon while I was waiting for the start of the last zodiac tour in the lagoon.Lighting
Icelandic light, so obviously special, not really hot nor cold. Despite the hour, the light is incredible and gives golden highlights to the clouds. As Iceland is near the arctic circle sun sets slowly in autumn.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, with an EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM + extender EF 2x III. The focal length used for this shot was 140 mm at f/8.Inspiration
I was impressed to see the number of Arctic gulls flying over the icebergs to fish in the lagoon and the different colors of ice in the foreground with the glacier coming out of the clouds in the background.Editing
I just had developed the raw file and done a slight crop to the left to remove a wing of a bird that was out field. In my camera bag
For those 10 holidays days in Iceland I had with me two bags. In the primary one was my Canon EOS 5D Mark III as main camera with 4 Canon EF lens in order to have maximum flexibility: a 17-40 f/4L USM + 50mm f/1.4 USM + 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM + 85mm f/1.8 USM and a Extender 2x III. I had also a large choice of filters: ND8 + ND 16 + ND 400 + ND 1000, an UV and a polarizing filter. A raincover Kata (very useful) and hung the bag a tripod Sirui. In my secondary small bag I had a Canon 60D as rescue camera and one Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT with transmitter Canon ST-E3-RT for flash with a remote control for long exposures.Feedback
Icelandic weather is highly changeable! So be prepared to make choices about what you really want to see and watch the weather forecast every morning before leaving to help you. This photo is a very good example: I had planned to be at this time of the trip in the Skaftafell National Park but I decided to go to Jökulsárlón as the weather was fine and forecast for the next day were very bad. It was the good choice as the next morning going to the same place I have done no picture! At the lagoon to have beautiful colors on icebergs, it is imperative to have the sun. To see a lot of gulls and seals at the entrance of the lagoon it is necessary that the water from the ocean goes back to the lagoon said employees so you don't need to do a boat tour how is quite expensive and just stay on the heights where I took this photo.
