Behind The Lens

Location

Anna and I decided that we don't need remote locations for our first photo session, so we went behind the little hill covered with shrubs in our neighborhood. We were sheltered, so people passing by could not see us and that was just enough.

Time

I rushed to take advantage of daylight after work and Anna was rushing to kick boxing class after the sunset, so we had a little over an hour to make some photos – the golden hour.

Lighting

I had nice sunset for the backlight and I used built-in flash with flash diffuser. I owe the rest of the magic to the carefully adjusted color balance in RAW conversion.

Equipment

I used my Canon 1000D with my Canon EF-50 prime lens (1/200 s, f/2.8, ISO 100).

Inspiration

Anna and I met just a month or two before and we talked about some unusual concepts (monochrome, shadows, goth). I learned that she likes Underground and that was my starting point – I wanted her to look like Selene. And without a proper leather outfit pale skin and piercing blue eyes had to be just enough.

Editing

The morst important part of post-processing was setting the right color balance and the rest is just minor tweaking (skin retouching and eye coloring). We are still satisfied with the final result.

In my camera bag

I carry everything I have: my trusty Canon 1000D, both lenses (EF-S 18-55 mm and EF-50 mm), a lot of lens filters and flash diffuser.

Feedback

The key moment for the right atmosphere was the clash of daylight at its end and carefully dosed flash, the rest was just a routine.
