Wow!! Is that a olive white eye?? Beautiful bird. Unfortunately endangered and verge of extinction. There are officially only 5-6 left on the island of Mauritius.
Nevertheless, gorgeous bird, beautiful capture, nice colors..

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my sisters back garden. She has a few birdfeeders in a tree which attracts many birds and my camera :) This little bird allowed me to get within several feet of it and watched me closely as I, and my big lens moved closer and closer.

Time

I took this picture in the middle of winter at around 1pm. There had been so many birds in the tree most of the morning and then this little chap came along to eat the berries. I took several shots of him, most of which were so perfectly posed by him/her but this was my favourite because of the way he was looking straight at me.

Lighting

The fairly shallow depth of field muted out he greens, greys and yellows in the background so perfectly. I think that it is great that all the muted colours are the colours of the bird.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS 650D with a Sigma 150-500 lens. The ISO was set at 400; f/9 at 1/500 and a focal length of 500mm. I did use a tripod but no flash.

Inspiration

Every day there were so many birds and several different breeds, feeding at the feeders and I did get some good pictures of them but in most cases there was a bird feeder somewhere in the picture, which I did not want. When this little bird came to feed (naturally) on the berries on the tree and in such a perfect spot, I had to drop everything and concentrate on getting a perfect shot.

Editing

There was a stick hanging down above his head which I used Photoshop to clone out. I also used the 'sharpen tool' lightly over his eye and beak.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 100mm fixed lens, a 15-85mm kit lens (which I don't use much) and a 75-250 kit lens, which I use more than the 15-85 but also not much. I also have a Sigma 150-500mm lens.

Feedback

Patience, patience, patience and when the opportunity arises don't let anything stop you from picking up your camera, getting yourself into the right spot and waiting for the opportunity. You need to be very quiet and slow when taking pictures of birds as they tend to take fright and disappear at any sudden movement or sound. I made comforting sounds all the while that I was taking pictures of this bird and moved very slowly and quietly.
