California has an incredible history that involves stories of the rugged wild west, the gold rush and consequent boom of San Francisco, and of course, Hollywood actors and movie stars. Often overlooked by visitors, California’s history began with the Spanish conquistadors who sought to expand their nation’s power along the Pacific Coast. This phase of early California history is known as the California Mission era, and Paso Robles is proud to have three California Missions located within a 30 minute drive of the downtown city square.

The oldest of the three missions is Mission San Antonio de Padua, founded in 1771 as the third California Mission along the chain that expands the California coast line from San Diego to Sonoma. Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was established the following year in 1772 as the fifth California Mission and Mission San Miguel de Arcangel was established many years later in 1797 as the sixteenth California Mission. Mission San Miguel de Arcangel is located seven miles north of Paso Robles.
