Behind The Lens

Location

Its taken in Hillerød about 50 km north of Copenhagen, Denmark. The view is taken away from the city to avoid light pollution

Time

The picture is taken in february when it's completely dark. Its approx. 80 photos each of 30 sec. at F3.5 The first and last was a little longer to recover some darker areas of the building

Lighting

Normally the castle is illuminated which would blow out the building but in the dark month after december they turn of the light off and this is better for the start-trail photo.

Equipment

My trusted Canon 5D mk III with Canon 35 mm 1,4L. The setup was only a tripod and a remote release. - And warm close as the temperature was below freezing.

Inspiration

I love Night shoots and Start Trails. This location is very close to my home so I just went there one everning and were quite happy with the result.

Editing

First all frames were processed in Lightroom: Color balance, Contrast, Lens correction etc. Then they were all stacked in Photoshop and with the blend mode Lighten the start trails were made. The final picture were the blended with a brighter shot to recover some details in the building. Finally I hade to remove light from 2 airplanes passing.

In my camera bag

Always my 5D mk III, with my favorite lenses the Zeiss 19 mm or Canon 24-70 mm. Sometimes I use the Canon 35 mm or the 14 mm.

Feedback

Find some dark building or other objects which can make a stunning foreground is alway a must for start trails.
