Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo at the Turriff Show in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I took my new mirrorless camera out for testing.

Time

I shot it late afternoon in summer.

Lighting

Image was shot outside with natural lightning, I waited for the owl to turn to get good textures and shadows.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS M with 18-55 STM lens, love it's portability and robust metal body.

Inspiration

I wanted to get creative with some black & white images and liked the details and textures of the feathers and piercing eyes. I'm very passionate about nature and love photographing wildlife and landscapes.

Editing

Yes I did basic RAW adjustment's in Lightroom then processed in Photoshop with a local adjustment to bring out the detail in the eye.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon 600D and assortment of lenses. That day I travelled light with My Canon EOS M and kit lens. I now have the 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens for general work and the 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM for my landscape's, both are excellent quality and value. I have a Manfrotto tripod and a cable and infrared remote for reducing vibration's. Also the usual photographer's accessories.

Feedback

Always manually focus on the eye, it's where the viewer is naturally drawn. Try to get an interesting composition, you don't always have to include the whole subject, as in my shot. Do your research and learn the animal you are photographing, it'll help you predict their behaviour and get the shot you want.
