Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just as I was dropped off a 40 minute helicopter ride to embark on a glacier walkabout in Juneau, Alaska US.

Time

This is a memorable moment after viewing glaciers from above then actually be walking on one. It was around 5pm the last tour of the day.

Lighting

Bit of a challenge being the end of the day with low light but I think it may of helped in creating more drama to the capture.

Equipment

Bare minimum, Nikon D90 with my favourite all around lens the 18-200mm. No flash or tripod, just me.

Inspiration

The moment I was dropped off the helicopter I was stunned by the beauty of the glacier and quickly realized I had to capture those people at a distance coming back from their walkabout to show the immensity and grandeur I was exposed to. It was memorable and this photo brings back the overwhelming emotion experienced.

Editing

Very little post-processing in Lightroom with added clarity.

In my camera bag

I keep it simple and carry my Nikkor lenses the 18-200mm classic all around lens, a fun 50mm, an 80mm (good for portrait and some almost macro) and my 70-300mm to get me just a little bit closer... Of course I have a foldable reflector/defuser along wit my trusty Manfrotto tripod and also some knee pads to help me get down on my knees.

Feedback

I think what makes this photo interesting is having taken the photo at end of day in low light. Be adventurous, be patient and open to new experiences. Seize the moment!
