Location
This sea urchin photo was taken on one of the beaches in Percé located in the Gaspésie peninsula in Québec, Canada. A tiny colourful jewel just waiting to be photographed as I was walking on the sea shore among rocks and splashing waves.Time
I was taking a long morning walk, it must have been around 8:30 am.Lighting
The morning sun was the only light.Equipment
This was shot with my trusty Nikon D90 with an 18-200mm lens on a tripod.Inspiration
The simple beauty of nature is what inspired me. As I was walking alone on the beach there is so much to see, and everything seemed so photogenic. But this little sea urchin was my eye stopper with its bright colours, the interesting pattern and texture. No bigger than about 2.5 inches (62mm), It caught my full attention for over an hour until the waves rocked it back in the ocean.Editing
Very little post processing, most done in Lightroom. Checked on the white balance and adjusted slightly. Adjusted shadows to bump up colours and contrast. In my camera bag
It varies, normally I carry very little and it depends on the type of photography I decide on doing. For this image capture I had camera, lens, tripod AND my knee pads along with my water bottle too. I enjoy shooting low which is why I like to have my knee pads handy.Feedback
Keep a keen eye and don't be intimidated by coming down low to discover and capture. There are gems out there we often walk right by without noticing. Take your time and enjoy how your subject reveals itself with the composition you frame with.
