Dragonfly are in general loved by all as we see them either hovering or darting around above water and land, or as we see here taking a rest on a chosen position. But they are also very territorial and highly skilled agile predators who easily snatch other insects from out of the air as food and are in fact a beneficial part of the eco system helping to keep less favourable type insects down in numbers. Fossils show large `Dragonfly` like creatures date back to the Carboniferous Period and grew to a very large size with a wingspan of over 2 and a half feet. If they still grew to that size today it is suggested they may quite easily hunt such prey as small birds, rodents or even small animals the size of household pets.

My first ever picture of a Dragonfly. I only noticed when viewing the picture that part of its top right wing appears to be missing. Paul.

Not always easy to catch a dragonfly but you have got a real close-up. Well done! Wendy
