Location
I took this photo on a golf course in Manchester, England. I had felt the somewhat bizarre urge to photograph mushrooms for some time, and a friend happened to alert me to some as she was walking her dog. Not one to miss an opportunity, I ran along with my camera and ended up finding over 20 different types of fungi in a relatively small space of land….Time
It was mid-afternoon, around 3pm. However, it was in October, so the sun was already getting low, and there wasn't much daytime left as this picture was taken….Lighting
The lighting was all natural and from behind the mushrooms, which I reflected it back underneath the mushrooms with a small piece of white card, to help illuminate the darker underside and really bring out the detail a bit more...Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mk ii with a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L lense, which I hand-held. Apart from the little piece of white card, that's pretty much it!Inspiration
I had felt an admittedly bizarre urge to photograph a mushroom for some time before eventually taking this picture. I think it was inspired by some pictures I saw in an old children's book, but I could be mistaken. Either way, it was the idea of a fantastical world of magic mushrooms, prancing fairies, and tall tales that ultimately drove me to grab my camera that particular day...Editing
As I always shoot in RAW, all my pictures undergo what I would term a 'basic edit'….checking levels, exposure, contrast, etc. In this particular instance, I also added a subtle filter to give it a hint of the more fantastical feel that I was after.In my camera bag

The time of day really makes a difference when it comes to outdoor macro photography. Although its a bit of a cliche in the photography world, you really can't beat a setting sun for some more dramatic/interesting directional light….it can often be this element that elevates an otherwise good picture to the brilliant!
