Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken a few miles from my home in Suffolk UK. It is just outside the village of Old Newton which is surrounded by farm land.

Time

This image was taken by chance. I was on my way home from the Suffolk Coast, after not a great days photography. As I drove towards home near Old Newton, I noticed the sky had become a mix of blue sky and clouds. The farmers were threshing the wheat and staring at the sky. I stopped the car quickly and ran into the field with the farmers, set up my gear within seconds, and shot this Suffolk scene around 2045. A not so good day turned into a great evening !

Lighting

The light was a peculiar mix of heavy clouds and blue sky. It made the huge expanse of wheat glow in this evening light. The sun was a orangey/red ball on the horizon shining upwards into the cloud. I wanted to emphasize this odd mixture of light so chose a high aperture and added a 0.6 hard grad. A truly memorable summer scene......

Equipment

Shot taken on Nikon 800e with Nikkor 24-70mm lens at 24mm f 18 exp 1.6 iso 100 plus gitzo tripod and hitech 0.6 hard grad. White balance cloudy.

Inspiration

I had been seeking to shoot the summer Suffolk coastline but had not had much luck, too crowded on this summers day. It was on the way home that I spotted this wonderful rural Suffolk scene. The farmers were hard at it bringing in the harvest late into the night, and just before the sun finally set I was in place in this wonderful wheat field with the farmers, shooting this amazing mix of light and colour at sunset which sums up the summer Suffolk countryside at it best.

Editing

I developed from raw and I really do like to do a lot of the processing in camera as being out in the landscape is what I like best- hence the use of filters mainly grads. I used Lightroom 5 to ensure the colours were as I saw them and the clarity to empahsise the wheat. I finished off with a photoshop 6 using levels and sharpening. Thats it !!

In my camera bag

I pack my backpack with nearly all my gear as it is always the way that if you dont, you then want THAT lens! I always use my Nikon 800e to capture scenes even though I have a back up Nikon 700. My favourite lens is a fx Nikkor 24-70mm which I have to say, most of my photos are shot with. I could not manage without a set of Lee and hitech hard and soft grads, my favourite being a 0.45 hard grad- it just does the job so nicely!! I also use a Lee polariser and hitech ND filters. Other lenses in the bag are Nikkor 70-200. Nikkor 50mm 1.4 and Nikkor 14-24mm and I have hitech hard grads for this huge lens. Tripod Gitzo systematic.

Feedback

Mid Suffolk would not be one of the top photogrpahic locations on peoples visit list. It is a mix of flat fields with some gentle hills and many pretty villages containing beautiful thatched cottages. The sky is the star of Suffolk- it is big and all encompassing and when the light and clouds marry you have a great landascape. Shooting the Suffolk coountryside requires times and patience, you have to read the weather and know your locations. One other tip, never rule out the places closest to your home! This shot was taken 15 minutes awa from where I live.
