Awesome photo!! We have lots of these guys here in Banff National Park and surrounding Provincial parks. They're great to photograph.

Behind The Lens

Location

Rocky Mountain National Park near the summit, west of the highway.

Time

Mid-afternoon with the sun nearly overhead.

Lighting

The sun was nearly overhead and the sky was partly cloudy.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D-70 with a Nikon 70-300 mm lens fully extended. I didn't use a tripod or any other assisting device. I rested my left elbow against my lower chest to use for a rest. As we were walking along a rocky trail, I had to move perhaps a hundred yards alongside the sheep (there were five rams walking together).

Inspiration

The beauty of the rams and closeness to the subjects. I have been in that area many times and had never seen any sheep in this area. I used the mountains and forest across the valley as a backdrop and focused on the sheep to blur the background.

Editing

Yes, I used Adobe Creative Cloud's Photoshop to slightly improve the exposure and color.

In my camera bag

I still use a Nikon D-70 with 18-55 mm lens and always carry the Nikon 70-300 zoom lens. I also sometimes carry a ProMaster 100-400 mm lens but didn't have it on this trip.

Feedback

Keep shooting! I have been shooting wildlife for many years but this is one of the two best photos of wildlife I have captured. The other was taken on the same day about two miles away from this point.
