Location
I took this photo in an underground walking tunnel just outside of Portland Oregon.Time
This tunnel is located under a street and provides a walkway from one side to the other. These tunnels are pretty long and let in next to no daylight towards the center so, in the late afternoon when I took this shot, they can get pretty dark in the middle.Lighting
The lighting for this shot is from a single off camera flash unit that has a Rogue FlashBender reflector attached to it. The light is aimed to the models left and the light that is hitting her is mostly reflected from the top of the tunnel.Equipment
For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 hand held at 1/100 of a second at f/5.6. The flash unit was a LumoPro LP180 at 1/4 power.Inspiration
I found these tunnels one day when I was out for a walk. Going through the tunnel I saw the light spilling through the other end creating these great textures and I wanted to use it for a location as soon as I saw it.Editing
The bulk of the post processing was done in Lightroom - mostly exposure and burning adjustments along with some sharpening and noise reduction done in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I normally keep my "kitchen sink" bag packed up that carries two bodies (Nikon D3 and Nikon D300), five lenses (Nikon 35mm f/1.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Nikon 85mm f/1.8, Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 and a Nikon 70-210mm f/4), and three flashes (2x Phottix Mitros + and a LumoPro LP180).Feedback
This shot was part of a series that I took down in the tunnel. When I get in to a space like this I like to take my time and try as many different ideas as I can so that I can create as many images as possible to draw from when I get back and sit down to edit. When I am out on location like this I will get my preset shots that I had in mind to shoot when I get to the location, but I will always try other shots on the spot when I get comfortable in the location. Overall I think that we spend about twenty minutes or so here before we moved on to the next location. I always suggest that photographers get the shots that they came for and then try something new and have some fun with it.
