Location
We shot this in our favorite nature preserve in Land O'Lakes, Florida.Time
As avid insect fans that frequent this nature preserve, we know what time of day to look for certain insects. Unfortunately for us, the best time for robberflies at this location is midday and in Florida, midday in August is brutally hot!Lighting
Since it was midday, nothing was needed for additional lighting but the challenge with that of course, is that the light can also be extremely harsh. Luckily we had some light cloud cover to keep excessive highlights down although we will bring a polarizer to help when the light is harsh.Equipment
When we hike, we keep equipment fairly light. While we have some better equipment, this photo was taken with a NIkon D5200 & the 18-55 kit lens.Inspiration
Robberflies are really interesting creatures. Amazing predators with curious & amusing personalities.Editing
Minimal post with this one; mostly just evening the tones. In my camera bag
Depends on the shoot! For our model photography we have quite an different arsenal of equipment, but for hiking and nature photography, we keep it minimal. A small tripod to hang on the backpack, some extra lenses (Genevieve prefers prime lenses & JD prefers zoom lenses), and a flash.Feedback
Patience and stealth. Keep low, and keep an eye or an ear on them. They are quite loud when they fly, so If you can track them, especially while they are hunting, you might be able to capture something awesome!
