Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from my seat in the audience at my daughters dance showcase at FSU.

Time

This photo was taken in the evening inside of the theater.

Lighting

The lighting levels during this show were relatively low and constant throughout the performance. With the dark theater and lower light level I did have to bump up the ISO so that I could keep my shutter speed around 200

Equipment

For this performance I used my Canon 5D Mark II and a EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens

Inspiration

I love taking photos of dance. My daughters spent thirteen years in a dance studio and when I purchased my first DSLR I started taking photos of the dress rehearsals for their recitals. I wanted to capture as many moments of the dances as I could so that we could always look back and remember all of their performances. Dance is actually the first action situation that I took photos of. I love capturing the beauty of the movement and the emotion of the dancers.

Editing

I did have to reduce the noise as well as adjust the levels and skin tone of the girls.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8, a Speedlite 430EX II, and plenty of cards. I have other lenses that I only take with me when they are needed.

Feedback

In photographing dance it is best to use the highest shutter speed you can get away with since many of the dances are fast paced. Sometimes the lighting levels are low so, unfortunately you have to bump up the ISO to get as much light as you can. It is very helpful if you can anticipate what the next move of the dancers will be so you can be ready to get just the perfect photo.
