Behind The Lens

Location

I took this Photo in the Silver falls state park in Or.in April. Spring is a great time to shoot waterfalls the water flow is usually at its highest.

Time

Taken on a cloudy day in mid- afternoon.

Lighting

Cloudy days are great for waterfalls, the clouds illuminate everything evenly as long as You keep the sky out of the shot otherwise You will blow it out.But for the greens and browns it is great. Be cautious of overexposing the water as well . I try and under expose at least 2 thirds or more for waterfalls.

Equipment

Cannon 60D on a sturdy tripod.

Inspiration

In the spring the amount of water coming over the edge, and hearing the power of the water as it hits the pools below is reason enough. LOL The park has a trail system on silver creek, And on this creek there are 10 waterfalls ranging from 40 ft to over 100 ft. It's a must see destination if You are into waterfalls.

Editing

Converting to B/W. The photo had some really good tones to start, But I wanted to narrow the visuals to mostly just the falls.

In my camera bag

Tripod, Cannon 60D a 55x250 lens and a 18x55 lens, I also use a polarizing filter.

Feedback

Experiment with exposure time when shooting those waterfalls I particularly like the soft milky look to the water using a longer exposure. never attempt without a tripod , it just won't work for those long exposures. If You have allot green in the shot like most outdoor scenes do than meter 2 thirds under exposed off a green area that is close to the subject, this should expose the rest of the scene very nicely.
