Behind The Lens

Location

Travel photography is a major love of mine. I travel light, just a backpack and a camera bag. I photographed these young Monks contemplating life at the ancient (1000 year old) Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Time

This is one of my favourite images from Chiang Mai. We had been walking through the Old City all afternoon and came across this Wat just on 'golden hour'. The young Monks had just had a visit from their parents and were due in the temple for prayer. This group took a moment to reflect at the old Wat. The setting sun boosted the golden hue.

Lighting

This is all natural light and is why photographers chase the beautiful sunrise and sunset glow.

Equipment

Fujifilm X100 (23mm fixed lens) @f/8, 1/125 sec and ISO 400.

Inspiration

Travel photography can be really tough. You need to portray the local landscape and custom and often you have tourists, cars, signs and other things that detract from your image. We had been walking all day and I only had a few quality photos. About an hour before sunset the sky had turned a beautiful orange just as we found Wat Chedi Luang and the temple. However so had lots of other tourists and local. This group of boys broke off from the group and followed from a distance to see what they were going to do.

Editing

This has had very minimal post processing. I basically boosted the contrast and definition in Aperture to bring out a little of the detail washed out by the setting sun.

In my camera bag

I travel very light thanks to selling my Nikon DSLR kit and picking up Fujifilm. I have a Fuji X100 and an X-E2. My X100, with it's fixed 23mm lens, is my carry everywhere camera and has seen a lot of use. With the X-E2 I get to change things up with the 18-55mm lens or 35mm 1.4. Throw in a couple of extra batteries and the EF-20 flash and I'm good to go. The beauty of the X-E2 is the wireless communication - I can send images to my smartphone, edit them in Snapseed and upload to social media.

Feedback

Get up early and stay out late. Seek the good light and avoid the crowds were possible. I like to get up while everyone is still sleeping and walk the streets, catching the locals preparing for their day. The middle of the day is ideal for a swim in the hotel pool and a short sleep before hitting the streets again in time for sunset and the evening activities. Travel photography can be tough with your family...you're always getting left behind. I have lost count of how many awesome photos I have with a couple of white skinned girls in the frame!
