Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my basement . My son has stopped using his fish tank and I had just seen a video on high speed photography and decided to give it a try. This was shot using a 5 gallon fish tank.

Time

I was at home in the evening and did this in my basement. It did not take much space.

Lighting

I used 3 speed lights wrapped in plastic bags as to not get them wet to light this. 2 lights facing the from the sides of the tanks and one above over the tank and a black backdrop approximately 5 feet behind the tank.I adjusted the power output of the flashes until I obtained the desired exposure. It's just amazing what you can do with multiple off camera flashes.

Equipment

I used my canon 6D , 70-200 mm Canon 2.8L IS II lens, manual focus , f 13 , iso 125, shudder 1/100 and at 100MM. I used a remote shutter trigger so I could time the shutter as I was dropping the strawberries in the tank. THe camera was mounted on my tripod.

Inspiration

My son has stopped using his fish tank and I had just seen a video on high speed photography and decided to give it a try. This was shot using a 5 gallon fish tank. I cleaned the tank thoroughly and used a squeegee as to minimize any water spots on the front of the tank. I had seen several pics of high speed fruit photography and I am not afraid to try new ideas or concepts.

Editing

Only thing I did was crop it in Lightroom 5 and just enhance the colors just a bit using the vibrance controls

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 6D with my 24-70 MM 2.8L II Canon lens, one 600 EX-RT flash with the ST Canon trigger.

Feedback

My advice is just to research the concepts of doing high speed photography and by applying them you'll be amazed and what you can create. I was just out there looking how to do it and found a way.
