Behind The Lens

Location

I visited an Arabian horse farm. They gave me permission to photograph the horses and to paint them if I gave them a copy.

Time

It was mid day.

Lighting

The barn/exercise arena had the large doors open, flooding the area with soft, beautiful light. We coaxed the horst to the position I wanted and got his attention toward the doors. He was standing with his head over the top rail of the fence. He game me the perfect pose.

Equipment

Back then I was using a Nikon D90 with an 18-140 zoom.

Inspiration

I love horses and was looking for subjects to use with a new technique.

Editing

I used to paint, traditionally, then I developed a "tick" in my right hand. I looked for a way to keep painting and did some training to paint digitally in Photoshop. This was one of the first horse paintings I did. I was in love with digital painting. If my hand "ticked", I just undid the stroke and kept going. I Have done close to 200 paintings now.

In my camera bag

It's pretty simple, actually. I have a Nikon D7100 with three lenses ranging from wide angle to 200mm or so.

Feedback

I would advise folks to keep their eyes open for great light and be ready to shoot. Try new things. Have fun with it.
