Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a weekly car show that happens every Saturday afternoon near where I live in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Time

I always try to shoot at the car show during Golden Hour to get the best possible light.

Lighting

It was a little cloudy on this day so the light was a bit flat. I think it works for this subject.

Equipment

This was shot with a pocket camera, the Sony RX100. I keep it with me all of the time. It's much lighter than my 5D Mark II.

Inspiration

I really enjoy shooting vintage cars and it doesn't get more vintage than this. The wear and tear on both the truck and the motorcycle really show a lot of character.

Editing

I did a fair amount of processing on this photo. I used a VSCO preset and adjusted the clarity to really bring out the grunginess of the scene. Also, I added a fairly heavy vignette.

In my camera bag

Normally, I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II and a few zoom lenses (24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8). But on this occasion, I happened to have my Sony RX100 and I think it did a great job. Amazing little camera.

Feedback

Shooting cars at a car show is all about removing clutter. There will be many things you don't want in your frame, so shooting details is often the only option.
