Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo under the San Clemente pier, San Clemente, California.
Time
This shot was taken at 7:25PM during sunset.
Lighting
I wanted to capture detail under the pier, but the sunlight during sunset was extremely bright. To get around extreme lighting conditions, I bracketed 5 shots, 2 underexposed, 1 normal exposure, and 2 overexposed. I then combined the images using an HDR software program to get the exposure I wanted and give the image a surreal look.
Equipment
The camera was a Nikon D800 with a Nikkor AF-S 28-300 lens. A tripod was mandatory since this was a 5 frame bracketed shot. No flash or other equipment was used.
Inspiration
I loved the scene with natural light spilling through the pillars of the pier, while people were playing on the beach, taking pictures, and enjoying the sunset. I wanted to capture all of this in a different and unique way, including details of the wood structure of the pier. I decided to use bracketed exposures and post edit in HDR to accomplish this.
Editing
I used 5 bracketed exposures to edit an HDR image that was surreal and provide lots of detail.
In my camera bag
For most shots I want a fairly fast lens with a good zoom range, so I always have a Nikkor AF-S 28-300 lens with me. But I usually carry a 105mm fixed lens for macro shots, and two fast lenses for low light situations. One is a Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8, the other is a Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 zoom lens. I love to shoot without a tripod, but for some shots a tripod is a must. So I nearly always carry a Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod with me. I like carbon fiber tripods because they are very light, but sturdy. Those are the essential tools in my bag, along with various lens filters, such as UV and Circular polarizers, and typical lens cleaning gear.
Feedback
My advice for others trying to capture a similar photo is to shoot at least 5 or 7 bracketed exposures. 3 bracketed exposures will often not be sufficient to get the high dynamic range required when shooting into direct light, such as the sun, while very dark areas are also in the image. If a less surreal look is desired, there are other digital blending, layering, and luminosity mask techniques out there using post processing software, such as Photoshop CS6.
