Saw this tree while hiking on a foggy day. I loved the way it twisted while the surrounding trees stood straight.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a nearby game land in central Pennsylvania on a trail I like to hike in the mornings. It was a particularly foggy day so I had hoped that it might lead to some interesting photos.

Time

I was lucky to capture this image early in the morning as the sun was rising. It was before work, so I had a limited amount of time for the hike. However, despite the time constraints, I felt that the conditions could lend themselves to a possible interesting capture, so the camera came with me.

Lighting

The light was quite muted due to the heavy fog, but it made for dream-like conditions in the woods. As an amateur photographer, I found getting the images I wanted - in the conditions present - difficult. So, a majority of the photos I took that day just didn't work for me. After taking many test images and making small adjustments, I was finally able to capture what I thought was a decent image.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon D7100 with an 18-200mm lens set at 18mm, 200 ISO, 1/30sec.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture this scene because I loved the contrast between the rows and rows of very straight trees and the single twisted tree. It was almost like a dream that the tree was having about dancing and being free. The scene wouldn't have worked as well if it wasn't for the heavy fog. It not only added to the dream state it also provided more contrast in the colors of the twisted tree and the straight ones.

Editing

I did a little post processing to increase the detail through sharpening and also to adjust the white balance and saturation. I used both Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I normally carry the following lenses: 18-200mm, 35mm 1.8 prime, and a 60mm micro Nikkor 2.8 prime. I also always have a B+W circular polariser, a Formatt Hitech 100mm filter system with hard edge and soft edge grad filters and both formatt hitech and lee ND filters up to 10 stops.

Feedback

This image was spontaneous and I had not brought a full kit with me. I would have loved a tripod in this case. I had to rest the camera on a tree to avoid blur. I would also have have liked to have had my grad filters to block a little of the light from the top of the image. Lastly, I shot a lot of angles for this scene. Probably along the lines of 10 different ones. I also locked the lens at 18mm. It really forced me to think hard about the composition and made me move all over the place.
