Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the San Diego Safari Park on my birthday! What a great birthday present and day it was!

Time

It was raining off and on all day. It was mid morning when I came upon the Gorilla exhibit.

Lighting

It was a somewhat rainy day. The photo was taken mid morning and the lighting seemed adequate at the time.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Nikon D7100. I used a Tamron 70-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I love photographing zoo animals. Especially the primates and I'm always looking for baby animals to photograph as it's one of my favorite subjects to capture.

Editing

All post processing that I do is minimal. I use Photoshop Elements 12 and basically I just touch the image up by adjusting the contrast, color, brightness as well as cropping when needed. Fortunately with this particular photo, the lighting was near perfect as was the situation so I didn't do much post processing at all.

In my camera bag

I usually carry several charged batteries as well as a macro lens and a couple other basic lenses. Since I'm relatively new to photography, I'm still working on acquiring more equipment. My favorite lens especially for zoo photography is my Tamron 150-600mm lens.

Feedback

Always be patient! Sometimes you have to wait awhile or possibly even go back to the location at another time of day to capture what you are looking for. Watch the animals' behavior and movements. Try to anticipate if possible what it might do next. Always try to photograph when you can capture both eyes clearly. Waiting for the right moment as well as anticipation and taking many shots will help ensure you get what you are looking for in your photograph.
