Behind The Lens

Location

This was a last minute decision to shoot a sunset without a decided location. While waiting for the rest to arrive I was on the sun apps on the phone looking for a location to shoot. It was July, in the middle of summer and eventually decided to head to Dungeness for the abandoned fishing boats.

Time

It was July, the middle of summer. We arrived well before sunset. This was taken at 18:48 with the sun still high in the sky. It was a warm day with anglers still busy casting their line off the beach.

Lighting

With the sun still high in the sky the lighting was harsh. I decided to do long exposures to get movements from the clouds.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D MarkIII with a TSE 24mm. I just love this lens! To get the long exposure I fitted a 10 Stps ND filter and a .9 Graduated ND to hold back exposure of the sky. Shot at 131 seconds, F/16 and ISO 50

Inspiration

After we spent some time scouting this boat caught my eye and immediately knew that I had to do this composition. The upside down bucket drew my attention. The clouds behind was moving slowly and after checking the direction of travel I just had to capture the movement of the clouds.

Editing

The filters did a great job in removing most of the highlights but the 10 stops added a blue cast to the image. I prepared the RAW file is Adobe Camera Raw by removing the highlights and to just balance the image contrast. It was then loaded onto Photoshop to remove the blue cast and adjust the colour to how I saw it.

In my camera bag

For landscape I must have the TSE 24mm. I just love this lens! Have I said that already? I got fed up having neck pain by looking at my images on the monitor that were taken with a wide angle and like falling over so though this lens is very expensive I just had to have it. The EF 70-200 F/4 IS also stays in the bag. These are the two lenses that I kept after switching to mirrorless. Also, filters, filter holders, adaptor rings and remote triggers. I also carry a 15mm and 35mm fast primes. I also have fast 50mm and 90mm. I must admit I used to bring all my lenses and ended up not using most, so now I only bring what I will use on a particular genre that I will photograph.

Feedback

Arrive at the location well early if possible to scout the area if you are unfamiliar with the location. The internet is full of information that you can use like photography sites such as Viewbug which give you the location and google maps to pinpoint the location. There are apps for tide, sun and moon location and time at sunrise and sunset, weather apps and if you want to shoot the milky way there are apps for that too. All these can help you prepare before the leaving your home. Keep you eyes open when on location, the angle of the light often show a suprising view from what you had in mind but don't get distracted from what you came to photograph. There is no right or wrong in photography. Aim for what you have envisioned and listen to what your senses tell you.
