Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Slocan River in Crescent Valley BC, Canada

Time

It was an early October morning around 6am, 2012.

Lighting

It was a gorgeous morning. Vortices of steam rose from the river in ghostly columns (known by some as spirit fog or devil's fog) while fog rolled through the mountains to the valley as the sun came up. This particular view took my breath away because of the reflection in the water and the first sunlight backlighting the fog. It was exciting and calming at once. I will never forget it.

Equipment

I was using all I had, a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm kit lens, hand held.

Inspiration

This was my first digital camera and I was very excited to learn about it. I'd had very little previous experience with photography and was simply trying everything to learn how the camera worked

Editing

Straight out of the camera!

In my camera bag

Things have changed some since that day when all i had was the kit lens. I've upgraded slightly to a D3200 and have a few lenses now. I am still very amatuer so only have basics. I always carry my Tamron 90mm macro lens, Nikon 70-300mm, and Nikon 50mm. I often bring my Vanguard Alta Pro 264 tripod and a remote shutter release.

Feedback

The only advice I'd have is to shoot RAW, have a great memory card, bring extra batteries, be willing to wake up and get out there while it is still dark to watch the dawn unfold, and while you are completely awed by the astounding beauty all around you, don't forget to keep shooting! There are many changes at dawn in the mountains and every single moment is stunning. Oh yes... You will most likely be getting wet or dirty or both as you unconsciously begin to hike through some dense wild areas where there is no cleared path, so dress warm, wear appropriate footwear and tie your hair back so it doesn't get caught in branches! I learned that the hard way, lol
