Terrific well-timed capture & amusing title. Congratulations on being featured.

Congratulations.
the anatomy of the beak looks a little off. Is the fish really in the beak? Has the skin so much flexibility that it can be moved away from the beak? Just out of curiosity.

No idea about the anatomy. The fish was way too big for this guy to swallow and he dropped it a few seconds later. I have about three dozen pics of the whole event. This was the best of the shots.

WOW! I'm sooo jealous! I love everything about this shot; the colors, the clarity, the catch...!

I use sparingly adjectives such as awesome, but, in this case because this water foul gave you the opportunity to yet identify the fish (Bluegill) so be it!

Super moment of a moment ; nice trigger finger . How can that Cormorant with the lovely emerald eyes swallow that big blue-gill with that spiny back ?

The colors in this photo are simply amazing...so crisp and clear. The water looks like I can touch it and actually get wet. Even the details on the fish are amazing. Great job!!!

Location
This was captured at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, AZ.Time
It was mid-morning so the sun was still low.Lighting
All natural light.Equipment
I used my Canon 1Dx with my 500mm f4 mkii and 1.4TCiii Focal length was 700mm F5.6 and 1/640 shutter ISO100. I shot this handheld.Inspiration
This was my first outing to capture birds. I was primarily an aviation photographer and thought it would be fun to try to capture smaller flying things!Editing
Since I shoot raw it needed “developing” which on this photo was basic color/contrast/sharpening.In my camera bag
Currently my kits are the Canon 1dx mkii and Sony A7rii. I have a fairly complete set of lenses for both from 11mm out to 300mm and both 1.4 and 2.0 TCs. I use Alien Bees strobes, Canon 580 speed lights, and have a variety of modifiers.Feedback
Being in the right place at the right time and Patience! And practice with shooting handheld. I never would have been fast enough with a tripod. The whole event was done in about 3 seconds. Sadly the cormorant dropped the fish.
