Behind The Lens

Location

I went along to a local Medieval event with the attitude of a good day out and some camera practice There was a group there showing owls giving me a great opportunity to get some close ups

Time

it was mid afternoon people were starting to look for food clearing the way for me to get some space around the subject Also the owls had settled down and were used to the noise making it a bit easier to shoot and the handlers were happy for me to come in close

Lighting

i was aware of the sun and positioned myself with sun behind me no flash required as the sun did its job also having the sun behind meant no problems with flare and the subject being well lit meant i could use whatever settings i required

Equipment

i used my canon 70d in hand and i had my 50mm prime lens fitted, this lens was a new purchase and i really wanted to give it a good try out i was pleased with the results

Inspiration

i wanted to capture the subject without and of the distractions i could see in the background i wanted the Owl to be not only the main subject but the only subject so a wide aperture that was achieved by this lens did the trick and it gave me a nice smooth green background produced by grass

Editing

apart from cropping and some sharpening there was no other post processing as im not a big fan of overprocessing pics especially if not needed

In my camera bag

i always carry my canon 70d with the 18-55 mm lens that came with it also in the bag is a 55-250mm zoom and my 50mm prime i think they cover most of what i shoot. I always have a small bean bag to position my camera on its been very handy, sometimes i have a manfrotto monopod and if needed i carry a 055xprob manfrotto tripod its big and sturdy. i have the usual array of filters and cleaning equipment and a remote shutter the filters are rarely used nd filters being used the most and on occasion i throw in a speed flash if i know i will definitely use it all this goes into my manfrotto backpack

Feedback

my best advice is not to rush to get the picture relax into the environment and allow the environment to accept you allowing people and animals to get used to being there and wait for a lull in the crowds if there are any just be patient and use the time your waiting to get some test shots enjoy taking the pictures take plenty of shots using different angles and don't be afraid to change the camera settings as sometimes great pictures come from settings we didn't expect to use or that we have set by accident after all we want something a bit different if we can.
