Location
Whakaari/White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano, situated 48 km (30 mi) from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. This particular photo was taken from the deck of a cruise ship. This was the 2nd day of our cruise around New Zealand headed to Australia. When we first approaced the island it was from the back. Once we came around to this view I was stunned to see the clouds rising from the island. I had no idea it was a volcano. What a surprise.Time
We approached the island mid-afternoon. It was overcast, but the sun managed to peek through the clouds long enough for me to get this shot.Lighting
I really didn't think that the picture would be effective as it was overcast for much of the time we spent observing the volcano. This particular picture was all about luck and a sliver of sun.Equipment
I had my D3S set up on a tripod for this shot. I did do a few sets of brackets in case I could extract some extra detail.Inspiration
I was fascinated by the steam rising from the floor of the volcano. I was hoping that the steam would give the picture a dramatic effect.Editing
I did use 3 photos and processed them in Photomatix. After that I added a bit of detail and contrast. I also boosted the saturation just a bit to bring the colors out some.In my camera bag
Currently I have a Nikon D800 and my lens of choice is my 14-24mm. I also have a Sony A7R that I love for it's size and pictures, but would like some more lenses for that camera.Feedback
I just take as many pictures as I can. I take a lot of duds, but then out of the blue I'll capture something that I really like. Just shoot shoot shoot and shoot from different perspectives.
