Location
I took this photo at a local park in the Buffalo, NY area. A lot of my photos are taken here. There is a nice little private area that looks like a path.Time
It was the in the afternoon during the summer.Lighting
I enjoy cloudy days when I do photo manipulations because there are less harsh shadows to deal with and more even tones so the photo will look more seamless and real. I do enjoy sunlight rays but for this particular photo, I wanted a more flat retro feel.Equipment
Most of work is handheld with natural light.Inspiration
I love photographing my two children. They have such great imaginations so when I say to pretend an owl is next to you, they really get into the act. I wanted the owl to represent her personality. My daughter is quiet yet quick, beautiful and intelligent so I thought the owl was a good choice for my vision. I have a version of this with my son and a bear.Editing
A lot of my work is post processed in Photoshop. There are level, saturation, and selective color masks applied and tweaked to give it an old tone. The owl is a stuffed owl I saw at a nature festival on a cloudy day. I isolated the owl and inserted it on the suitcase. Sizing the owl to the proportionate size can be a little tricky. In my camera bag
I just upgraded to a Nikon D-750 but this was actually taken with a Nikon D-90 with a 18-105 lens.Feedback
Make sure to take photos you want to insert with flat light because it will blend much better with the background. I have a folder filled with animals that I isolate and wait to use. Sometimes it is planned and sometimes it isn't. I play around with many versions and see what looks the most lifelike. Props are very important too. I go to garage sales all the time looking for fun props to use. The umbrella set the feeling for the kind of look I wanted.
