Location
In the Galapagos Islands - where the Blue-footed Booby is KING! Fly into Puerto Ayorro and take a 3-day tour. It will change your life!!! This photo was taken on January 9, 2008. My equipment has changed a bit since then.Time
Afternoon - because that's when the tour boat and the refuge rangers allowed us onshore. :)Lighting
A small flash on the camera might be good to bring out eyes, but generally The Galapagos are ideal for natural lighting.Equipment
Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, f13 @ 1/80, ISO 200.Inspiration
The look in Papa's eyes. He and Mama have made one egg, which she is keeping warm while he stands guard in his "tuxedo" uniform with the unbelievably blue feet.Editing
Maybe a smidgen of saturation increase and some lightening of the shadows in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Since I travel internationally for my job, I try to carry the least equipment necessary for where I will be. This changes with almost every trip. Bodies: Canon EOS-1D X, and Canon 5D MK III. Lenses: Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon EF14mm f/2.8L II USM, and a Canon 2x tele-extender. All fit nicely in my non-descript "Crumpler Seven-Million Dollar Home."Feedback
Take a tour to the Galapagos Islands. Photo tours are good, but pricey. Regular-person tours are less expensive and the guides on most ships are good photographers who are eager to help you get great images. • Tell the guide what you hope to photograph and they'll help you find the right location an angle. They will also allow you to lag behind a bit if the photos options are good. • Take 2 bodies. One will break down! • Clean your lenses and bodies after each visit to shore. • Lean on the zoom lenses because you will not be allowed to wander off the trail. • Watch for the action shots!
