Location
This photo was taken whilst on a short break in the North East of England. The photo is of a section of brightly coloured beach huts lining the sea-front in Whitby.Time
The picture was taken during a mid morning stroll from our hotel into Whitby town centre where I planned to get some more shots from the pier. It was a clear day, but think the picture would have benefited from a bit more cloud in the sky to add a bit more interest.Lighting
The fact that it was such a clear day with the sun high in the sky, meant that the colours of the beach huts really came to the fore and popped from the image. I think this helps to add a distinct Summer feel to this picture.Equipment
I took this photo using my Canon EOS 600D together with a Sigma 105mm prime lens. The use of the 105mm lens with an aperture of 2.8, meant that the huts further away became increasingly out of focus, adding greater depth to the image. No tripod was used in this instance, however I would be tempted to try this again with the use of a tripod should the opportunity arise, taking multiple exposures to create a HDR image and see how the two compare.Inspiration
I saw the huts from our hotel room when we arrived in Whitby. I loved the location and the colours. I already had this composition in my mind before we went down to the sea front to explore the opportunity further. This picture to me is Summer caught in an image and I like to think when people look at this it brings a smile to their face and memories of holidays at the beach.Editing
I adjusted brightness and contrast settings to make the colours even more appealing. I also cropped the image so the huts filled the frame. In my camera bag
I have my trusty Canon EOS 600D, I didn't have a big budget for a camera but equally wanted a model that was a little more advanced than the entry level. I ended at the 600D. It's packed in the bag with the 18-55mm kit lens, together with the canon 55-250mm purchased specifically for our honeymoon trip to South Africa. The wife was pleased with the photos when we returned, not so pleased with the camera and this lens being glued to my face throughout our trip. I hate missing an opportunity! I also pack my Sigma 105mm prime lens. This is my lens of choice for a lot of my photography including macro and close nature/animal portraits. I have recently purchased the Tamron 150-600mm lens. I can't say this is normally in my bag as it simply won't fit but I do love it.Feedback
I think the biggest thing for me for this shot was patience. I wanted the image to be free from people, the image looks deserted from that point of view. This however could not have been farther from the point. I had to change my perspective a number of times to avoid including people, before settling on this shot. I think it was worth the wait!
