Wonderful photo. Would love to know how you managed to get on the roof to take it!

Location
The photo is taken from the top of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.Time
I took the photograph in the the afternoon. This is one of the great things about black and white photography. You don't need the colourful skies, and sometimes the cloudier, the better.Lighting
This was taken on an overcast day which helped with the feel of the picture.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon 60D with Sigma 17-50mm lens at 26mm - 1/25, f/13 ISO 200. No flash was used.Inspiration
The rest of my days in Paris has been incredibly sunny. As soon as there was some cloud, I knew I wanted a moody shot of one of the grotesques (I had called them gargoyles, but I have been corrected since). They truly do look as if they are watching over this fantastic city! I wanted to of course include the tower in the background so positioned myself accordingly. Although I did take it in colour, I always had black and white in my mind.Editing
The shadows have been brought out and the clarity and contrast have been increased to emphasise the fantastic texture to the piece. In my camera bag
I now carry what I feel is the holy trinity of lenses for landscapes - a 16-35mm, a 24-70mm and a 70-200mm. I have very recently upgraded to full frame and enjoying the clearer pictures at higher ISOs. Also in my kitbag are some ND filters, a remote trigger and of course a tripod. I never go anywhere without one and so have a number of them from a Sirui carbon fibre one under 1kg to a Manfrotto 055.Feedback
This does look better on an overcast day as it adds to the moody feel. I don't know if you can go up at night, but I would love to try it again myself at night with some stars and/or moonlight.
