Thanks! I was about 500m away. Park rangers made sure no one could get any closer... The sight was so mesmerizing that I am sure I would have gone way too close (and not make it back...) without them :)

This photo and your feedback in your "Behind the Lens" section has given me new inspiration to just let the subject jump to me. Thanks you!

Location
This picture was taken on Big Island in Hawaii from the Kalapana overlook. The Halema'uma'u volcano was erupting higher up on the island and the lava flowing into the sea was producing a gigantic plume of volcanic gas/water vapor. The lava moves in lava tubes beneath the hardened surface of more recent flows and is invisible until it reaches the sea.Time
This was shot just as the day was coming to an end. The sun was just about to disappear below the horizon, offering the perfect light conditions and right there the lava flow increased, producing this magical moment.Lighting
I was there earlier in the day and waited until the sun was just about to set, that magical golden hour moment.Equipment
Camera: NIKON D3 Lens: Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 Focal Length: 200mm Shutter Speed: 1/4 s Aperture: f/6.7 ISO: 1600 on tripodInspiration
I flew over the island by helicopter and when I reached the south coast this magical scenery appeared. The moment I saw it I knew I had to come back at night to capture the majesty of it. I went back the next day, driving four hours to get there and a bit of hiking as well. At 10 p.m. the Hawaii county officers escorted me out and it was time to go back to my hotel, which was still a four-hour drive back.Editing
No post processing, except some noise reduction (noise ninja) and sharpening (Lightroom). In my camera bag
Nikon D3 + D2x Lens: 28-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 10.5mm f/2.8 Flash Speedlite SB-900, tripod, monopodFeedback
Nothing beats perseverance and determination. This picture took me an entire day. I left my hotel at 10am to get to the Kalpana overlook at 2:00pm. The light was inappropriate at that time of the day so I hiked around, always staying at a safe distance, to find the best angles from which to shoot. I only started shooting at around 6:00pm, changing location as the evening progressed. No picture comes easy, If you are convinced that you are onto something, take the time to observe, to master your subject. Never be in a hurry, too many time we jump into a scene instead of letting it jump to us.
