Location
This photo was taken at my home, outside on our deck - Its one of a family of Butcher birds that visit us every time my neighbour goes on holidaysTime
I shot this late in the afternoon with the sun setting and the light filtering through the trees. I was really pleased how well the golden bokeh came outLighting
In this case I was lucky with the light and the bird was in the right place - I didnt shoot directly into the sun but rather at 45%. The golden hour before dark really paid off this timeEquipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 600D using a 150-500mm Sigma lens (absolutely great for bird photography and reasonably priced). Hand held. ISO 400 1/125 sec at f/6.3 Very narrow depth of field.Inspiration
I wanted to get some nice shots of this family of Butcher birds that had become so friendly before the young left to start their own familiesEditing
I haven't done too much with this. I use Lightroom to level up the blacks and white levels, a slight lifting of the shadows and then a little crop to emphasize the negative space for the bird to stare in toIn my camera bag
Thats an interesting question and Im sure some will laugh when I say that I keep a compression bandage in case of snake bites, but its true. I photograph mainly birds and that usually entails me wandering into snake territory. Queensland has nine of the worlds 10 most deadly snakes, apparently. I also carry spare batteries, a cleaning cloth, a small speaker to plug into my phone app containing bird calls....giving all the secrets away here!!Feedback
Birds are particularly inquisitive creatures so stand still and keep quiet and they will quickly get used to you. Wish I could give more advice but the key is patience and perseverance. 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
