As the spectacular northern lights dance silently above Iceland’s Glacier Lagoon, my mind dances between being awestruck at what is happening before me, and figuring out how to make a shot that works. As beard and hands freeze, I ponder how to overcome a problem - the high dynamic range (large difference between brightest and darkest) that exists between the bright lights in the sky, and the dark foreground. The solution: a long exposure, 90 seconds to be precise. For the first 60 seconds, my gloved hand covers the front of my lens, from the top of the sky, down to the horizon line. I keep it moving slightly so that no hard line appears in the image. After 60 seconds, I take my hand away and expose the dazzling lights. This way, the foreground appears nice and bright, with 90 seconds of exposure and the sky is detailed and bright - but not too bright - with 30 seconds of exposure.

The camera was a Nikon D7000 with 10-24mm lens, a cable release and, most importantly, a Slik tripod.
