Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the backcountry mountains located between Reno, Nevada and North Lake Tahoe. Adam Schembri, Travis Cunningham, and I took a short hike from the top of Slide Mountain to this place that we call Eagles Nest. We travelled to this spot with our snowboards to hang out, have some fun, take some pictures, and then find some fresh backcountry snow to ride. Adam inspired this shot by proposing to Travis the idea of this yoga pose he called " Peace Be with You". The amazing depth of field illusion, subject composition, and the placement of the cloud was all luck! I didn't even notice the cloud in the composition of the shot until I got home and uploaded the pictures of the day to my computer. When I saw this photo it felt magical, and I felt that this was the luckiest shot that I have ever snapped in my many years of loving photography!

Time

It was taken at 11:44am on March 26th, 2009. I am passionate about taking photos of snowriders and snow covered mountains. March is my favorite month because it always seems to offer the most favorable mix of opportunities for photography of beautiful snow and bright sunshine. This day was one of those perfect March days! I was in the right spot, with the right people, at the right time, to capture my perfect photo!

Lighting

Clear natural sunlight increased by the brilliant diffusion of white mountain snow. I did not have my flash on...I was shooting in speed burst mode, I was just having fun capturing friends playing in the snow in the backcountry of beautiful Lake Tahoe!

Equipment

This photo was captured with a SONY DSC-V3. The settings were at: f/8, shutter speed 1/1,000 with the ISO 200.

Inspiration

Usually I am obsessively inspired to capture the perfect "Big Air" snowboarder shot, or the amazing fresh powder rooster tail snow spray shot. This shot was completely composed and inspired by the playfulness of my friend Adam, who has been a "ham for the camera" since the day I met him!

Editing

Just a light amount of enhancement and sharpening in photoshop. I want the quality of my digital files to be as good as the quality of a sharp 35mm slide film photo.

In my camera bag

Normally when heading to the mountains my SONY DSC-V3 is put in my snowboard bag which is filled with jackets, gloves, socks, goggles, tools, ect. The digital era has enabled me to travel light when heading to the mountains to snowboard and shoot! All I carry for my day of photography on the slopes is my SONY camera and a few handkerchiefs to wipe any moisture from the camera and lens, and to wrap the whole camera for protection while I am actually snowboarding down the mountain.

Feedback

As I said this capture was a lucky one! When I saw this photo on my computer monitor I had the overwhelming feeling that this was a "once in a photographers' lifetime" shot. The cloud appearing between the two in their yoga pose really was some sort of miracle for me! Still every time I view this picture it fills me with that great joy that photographers' seek in their quest of their art of photography...it also fills me the love of shared friendship and great appreciation for Mother Nature! As far as advice to other photographer's...go out and have fun with your friends and take a lot of photos in the snowy mountains on sunny days!
