Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Whiteswan Lake in the East Kootenays British Columbia about 42km south east of Canal Flats and Columbia Lake off of hwy 95

Time

It was taken sometime between 1 and 3 pm.

Lighting

I just used natural light.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 30D with 17-85mm lens.

Inspiration

It was there, and I love landscapes.

Editing

Yes, I shot in RAW first then I use camera raw initially to reduce noise and do some color correction and adjust for shadows and highlights. I then go to photoshop for further cleaning up of various aberrations such as removing anything in the shot that shouldn't be there like shadows or birds that just look like black dots etc. and some sharpening. I also use NIK plugins in PH that allow for further adjustments and effects like tone mapping, saturation, etc.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 30D,17-85mm & 70-300mm zoom lenses, Hoya polarizing filter plus the Canon PowerShot SX60 HS Camera with 65X optical zoom lens with a 21-1365mm zoom range.

Feedback

First and foremost have fun, look for things that no one else sees - a tree is a tree is a tree - but how you frame it in your shot and how the light plays on it can make all the difference in the world. As an example I took a shot of a tree just after a rain storm and in the distance through the dark storm clouds the twilight sun started to peek through and the raindrops in the tree captured the sunlight which made it look like little lights, which was rather striking but the one I liked best was of one of the raindrops capturing the ray of light and trees in the distance creating an inverted scene in the raindrop tack sharp, and the trees, mountainscape and ray of sunshine in the background out of focus. The whole picture is mostly dark blue in the upper half with a black bottom half and just a little silhouetted twig branch coming from the top ending in the raindrop.
