Behind The Lens

Location

Honestly? My decking in the back yard, the light in the afternoon is lovely, the textures on the outside wall worked well for the gritty feel I was after and we could keep the shoot time down, which sometimes when youre working with an easily bored child, can go a long way :)

Time

Late afternoon, around 4pm

Lighting

The lighting was fairly flat as it was quite overcast, but the reflector went a long way to helping there.

Equipment

I always shoot with my wee fuji xs1 its not too heavy and I dont have to worry about lenses, the only other bit of equipment was my reflector

Inspiration

This particular image was originally disguarded , we were shooting for the 'outside influences' set in which I had asked her to look as sad as she could but her body angle was wrong, when I looked back through the images in lightroom later, her expression stuck out and I decided to use it as a stand alone.

Editing

Almost always :) Lightroom for some exposure tweeking and then into photoshop. Once in photoshop the image was cropped, and then began the multi layers of dodge and burn, a little clean up , some vignette and background blur, a little help from topaz adjust just to pop out the dodge and burn work. then finally I did a sharpen layer, erased areas I wanted to pull back and added a small amount of gradient map in b/w

In my camera bag

Both cameras, my fuji xs1 and fuji finepix s200 as a backup, a small off cam flash with a home made marge tub diffuser just in case, a little gorilla pod, my tripod and my reflector.

Feedback

Go through various over the top emotions with the child and make a big game of it, william shatner style overacting, then slowly pull it back a little during the shoot, join in, do it yourself, pull faces..have fun with it, dont try to make it too serious or let the shoot go on for too long, take breaks, avoid sugary snacks :)
