Location
This was taken at Falconry Days in Northumberland, a superb centre which houses all sorts of beautiful birds of prey. This one is called Grace.Time
It was taken at approximately 2.30 in the afternoon. The owl was in a birdhouse and the light was shining in at an angle.Lighting
I wanted this image to be dark overall and only used the natural light to pick out the detail.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III. Since natural light was already coming into the bird house and I wanted the picture to be dark, no flash was used. I used my 70 - 300 lens and shot at 1/250, F5.6, ISO 200. I did not use a tripod, the camera was handheld.Inspiration
I wanted to emphasize the beauty of the owl and its amazing eyes, while doing something a bit different. I took many shots of her looking at me with her head upright, but when she tilted it to the side, and it was only very briefly, I knew that was what I was after, and managed to capture her at just the right angle.Editing
I have cloned out light spot and a stray feather as I wanted the background to be completely dark to draw the attention to Grace herself. I also increased saturation slightly to emphasize those eyes!In my camera bag
I take my canon body and the 24-105 kit lens and a 70-300 zoom lens at all times. I also have a monopod attached to the side of my camera bag and spare batteries!Feedback
When photographing birds, I'd suggest a decent zoom lens and keeping the shutter speed high as the movements are so quick. I automatically set mine to 1/250 and take it from there.
