Behind The Lens

Location

I took the picture of the pelican while living in Florida. I took a visit to one of the local parks as I was working for the Pasco County Tourism office and we always needed pictures of the local area. The pelican was perched on a pole.

Time

I was around 9 a.m. and the park is a local fishing haunt for citizens so there are plenty of birds who live there. It was a beautiful day and I proceeded to take a lot of pictures of the area especialy of the birds.

Lighting

It was a natural light photograph but fairly early in the day so not a lot of contrast.

Equipment

At that time I was using my Nikon D70s digital SLR. I had a Tamron zoom lens 18-300mm. The aperture was 6.3 at ISO200. I was using a tripod but did not use flash as there was enough light

Inspiration

I love birds and thought the pelican perched on the pole would make a useful shot. It seemed quite relaxed and allowed me to take few shots of him at different angles.

Editing

Yes, I did post processing and this is a result of me cutting out the pelican and placing it on a background of burnt paper and then adding sepia. I actually did it for a friend who had seen it and asked me to do a copy for her to give as a birthday gift. The yellow background and pebbles were added later. I designed this final background myself by setting it up on my patio stone blocks, adding the golden yellow paper, arranging the stones and then photographing this as a background to add to my own collection. I then pasted the original photo onto this new background.

In my camera bag

I don't carry a lot but now use a Nikon D5100 with a Sigma zoom lens 18-250 mm along with my basic Nikon lens 18-55 mm. I take a tripod when working locally but find it too much to take on taking overseas trips. I would love a fast 2.8 zoom lens but can't afford it - maybe one day.

Feedback

There was nothing complicated about capturing this picture - creative thinking is the only thing that is needed along with all the usual pointers that most photographers know of. I love trying new things on my Photoshop and Onone Perfect Photo Suite 8 software so if you have the passion, you will be able to do something different.
