Location
I took this photo at Physical Limits in Cornwall, Ontario Canada. It is of Gym Co-Owner and trainer Jennifer Christoff.Time
It was probably just after noon. It was lit with strobes so the ambient light impact was minimal.Lighting
This was lit with an AB800 bare and high to the right of the subject with a couple cheap ebay kit strobes on either side behind for rim light. The interesting thing about the lighting was more about the lens and aperture. Shooting a Canon 50mm 1.8 wide open would generally over expose the shot but there is a great tool to help with getting a proper exposure using lighting and a shallow depth of field. A variable ND filter.Equipment
Canon 60D with a great lens with an even better price tag. The Canon 50mm 1.8 which retails for around 100 bucks! I used an Alien Bee AB800 and 2 cheap Ebay strobes. Strobes were fired using Paul C. Buff Cyber Syncs.Inspiration
Jen arrived in shape and ready to have fun. That combined with some nice lighting and that's inspiration enough to pull off a great series.Editing
Of course we want to get the shot as close as we can in camera but I love editing Fitness. It's all about accentuating what is already there. The light does half the work and editing takes it to the next level. This shot had a little blemish work, some dodging and burning, a slight highpass filter but what really made it was the color work for me. I used one of my favorite techniques on this one. Duplicate your layer using Control J or Commnad J on a Mac. Open a selective color adjustment layer, change the color to black and slide the Cyan slider toward the right. Adjust for taste. This give a great cinematic look to most photos. In my camera bag
Canon 60D, Canon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 10-20mm for Real estate, Other than that I just use Kit lenses.Feedback
Check out the lighting info above. You can pull this off without the open aperture and still get a great look, but if you want to light it this "dramatically" and still have a really shallow DOF, you will need an ND filter. Check out more of my work at http://framedphotography.ca and feel free to shoot me any questions you may have. Happy shooting!!
